The First Step on Your Fertility Journey: What to Know When You Decide You’re Ready to Get Pregnant
Mar 26, 2026LISTEN TO THE FULL EPISODE ON THE HER FERTILITY PODCAST
There’s a moment that often feels simple, but is actually profound.
The moment you decide: “I’m ready to have a baby.”
And while that decision can feel exciting, it can also bring up a surprising amount of uncertainty.
What do I do first? How do I get pregnant easily?
What actually matters? What do I need to know to get pregnant?
Am I missing something? What should I do to get pregnant?
After supporting so many women on their fertility journeys, I’ve seen this firsthand:
Most people aren’t given a clear, step-by-step understanding of what this journey actually looks like.
And when you don’t know what’s coming next, it can create a lot of anxiety.
That’s exactly why I created this series.
We’re going to walk through the fertility journey step by step—from the moment you decide to get pregnant, through every possible path that may unfold—so you feel informed, supported, and empowered at every stage.
And here, we do things differently.
At Her Fertility Support, we believe you don’t have to choose between clinical care or holistic healing.
You get to use both.
If you’ve ever felt like you’ve been pushed in one direction:
“Just trust the medical system”
or
“Just focus on natural healing”
…and neither felt like the full picture…
You’re not wrong.
Because your fertility doesn’t exist in just one lane.
It’s both:
-
Physical and emotional
-
Biological and neurological
-
Clinical and deeply human
That’s why we take a whole-self approach—combining science, research, and medical insight with nervous system support, mindset, and connection.
Because when you support your whole body, everything changes.
Step One: Preparing Your Body to Get Pregnant
If you’ve decided you’re ready to get pregnant, this is where we begin.
For Women: Understanding Your Cycle
The first step is allowing your body to return to its natural rhythm.
That means:
-
Coming off hormonal birth control (with guidance from your provider)
-
Reviewing any medications with your doctor
-
Letting your healthcare provider know you’re trying to conceive
From there, it’s essential to learn your cycle.
Your menstrual cycle has four phases, and understanding them gives you insight into:
-
When you’re ovulating
-
When you’re fertile
-
Whether your cycle is functioning optimally
Tracking your cycle isn’t just helpful—it’s empowering.
It allows you to understand your body instead of guessing.
For Men: Sperm Health Starts Earlier Than You Think
Here’s something many people don’t realize:
The sperm you’re using today was created about 70 days ago.
That means:
-
Stress
-
Nutrition
-
Environmental toxins
-
Heat exposure
…from the past two months can impact fertility today.
Male fertility is often overlooked—but it is equally important.
It takes two to create a pregnancy.
The Missing Piece Most People Don’t Know About
To get pregnant, you need three things:
-
Egg
-
Sperm
-
A pathway for them to meet
That third piece is often overlooked.
In the body, that pathway is cervical fluid.
Around ovulation, cervical fluid changes to create the perfect environment for sperm to travel to the egg.
Without it, conception becomes much more difficult.
If you’re not noticing healthy cervical fluid, it’s something to pay attention to.
Sometimes the cause is simple:
-
Dehydration
-
Medications (like antihistamines)
-
Lifestyle factors
Your body is always giving you information—you just need to know how to read it.
Do You Need Ovulation Tests?
You’ve probably seen ovulation predictor kits.
And while they can be helpful for some people…
You don’t actually need them.
When you understand your cycle, you can identify ovulation naturally.
More importantly, you avoid creating unnecessary stress or pressure around timing.
Because fertility isn’t just about hitting the “perfect day”—
it’s about supporting your body as a whole.
Your Nervous System Matters More Than You Think
This is where the conversation shifts, and where most fertility guidance falls short.
Your reproductive system does not operate in isolation.
It’s directly connected to your nervous system.
And here’s the truth:
Reproduction is not a survival function.
If your body feels stressed or unsafe, it will prioritize survival over reproduction.
That means chronic stress can directly impact:
-
Ovulation
-
Hormone balance
-
Overall fertility
We’ve normalized:
-
Constant stress
-
Poor sleep
-
High caffeine intake
-
Always being “on”
But your body hasn’t adapted to that pace.
So the goal isn’t to eliminate stress completely.
It’s to regularly bring your body back into rest and safety.
How to Support Your Nervous System
You don’t need to overhaul your life.
Small, consistent shifts matter:
-
Prioritizing rest
-
Creating moments of calm
-
Supporting your body daily
Because when your body feels safe, it can move into what I call: “Welcome baby mode.”

Nutrition, Supplements, and Supporting Your Body
At this stage, your focus is simple:
Give your body what it needs to create life.
Start a prenatal that:
-
You’ll actually take consistently
-
Works well with your body
The most research-backed fertility diet is the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on:
-
Whole foods
-
Healthy fats
-
Protein
-
Nutrient-dense carbohydrates
Reducing:
-
Processed foods
-
Excess sugar
-
Alcohol
-
Caffeine
supports both egg and sperm quality.
This isn’t about restriction.
It’s about nourishment.
A Final Note: This Can Happen for You
In the fertility space, you often hear how long things can take.
And while that’s true for some....It’s not the only story.
It can also happen quickly.
When you:
-
Understand your body
-
Know your timing
-
Support your nervous system
-
Nourish yourself
You create the conditions for fertility to thrive.
And just as importantly, you stay connected to hope.
